Known to stop an itch in its tracks, regardless of the cause. A single spray can halt the pain of cuts and burns, including cooking burns and sunburns. Mildly antibacterial and antiseptic, it is used for problem skin and acne, sunburn, and skin infections. Its styptic properties make it an effective aftershave because it helps stop bleeding while helping heal irritation. It has been found to be effective in relieving the itch and pain of poison ivy and oak, sunburn, shingles, and more. Keep a bottle at hand initially as spritzing will need to be repeated frequently at first, but you will be amazed –and relieved --at how quickly the pain or itching will disappear.
Yarrow is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. Massage in clockwise motion on the abdomen to relieve digestive spasms or menstrual discomfort. It has been used in sitz baths for hemorrhoids and postpartum healing. Mist and massage, or use as a compress, for varicose veins (add cypress), and to reduce swelling as a result of fluid accumulation from injury or rheumatism. Clients have reported that massaged into the skin, it helps relieve muscle pain.
Yarrow is also useful for treating your animals (for all the reasons people like it) especially hot spots, or nervous animals.
The fragrance of yarrow is very herbal. It can be off-putting to some, in which case you may want to combine it with another hydrosol (A Yarrow-Lavender hydrosol combination is especially effective.) or add a more attractive essential oil scent to it. Many people just accept the herbal fragrance for what it is and enjoy the benefits as the fragrance does not linger. Interestingly, one of the reasons it is so very effective with animals is because they seem to like the smell. Must be some type of evolutionary holdover in this.
It is reported that it takes one metric ton of yarrow flowers to produce less than one-half liter (approximately 2 cups) of essential oil, so the yarrow hydrosol is one of the more potent waters. Yarrow enhances mental calm and inner peace.
Internal Applications: Yarrow is a good digestive aid, helps reduce fever and eases aches and pains in association with flu and colds, stabilizes body fluids and gets rid of excess water without being overly diuretic.
Shelf life: Yarrow is stable to very stable for up to two years.
