Why emu oil?
Ask Abbey

Emu oil is a wonder of deep penetration. It has been clinically documented to increase the penetration of active ingredients down to the lower layers of the skin where they are most effective, and to help thicken skin that thins with age. If dry skin or wrinkles are your main concerns, applying a layer of emu oil over any other treatment creams enhances the penetration and effectiveness of the actives and moisturizers. It is wonderful used in conjunction with eye creams and will chase away those eye wrinkles quickly when patted on top of either Intense Line Relief or Eye Nourishment Creme. It is especially useful in increasing the penetration of the peptides in the eye cream.

Emu oil can be somewhat, well, oily, so it is best applied at night. A generous bedtime application also gives it an uninterrupted amount of time for it to do its work. You will be pleased.

NATURAL BEAUTY: Love the Skin You're In

What price beauty? The financial and emotional cost of beauty can escalate exponentially with the passing of years. Botox injections, surgery, collagen injections, more Botox, chemical peels, lasers, facials, oxygen treatments, dermal fillers, more Botox..... When is enough enough?

Enough is enough when you find yourself spending more time obsessing about how you will look each day than you do enjoying the gift of time that the day provides. Enough is enough when you refuse to answer the door if you are not wearing all your makeup. Enough is enough when you are reluctant to go out because you haven't had a monthly facial. Enough is enough when you are willing to pay $150.00 for a jar of cream --or your teenage daughter begs for a $75.00 bottle of foundation-- because Cosmo says it works.

Someone once said that beauty may be only skin deep but that was deep enough. It should not be. We all know people who may not have impressed us as overtly attractive upon a first meeting, but as we came to know them more deeply, we found ourselves realizing that they were indeed physically beautiful, as if it had been only a matter of adjusting our focus. "Sure, sure," you are saying, "that is all well and good, but what about these lines around my eyes." We can fix that. Fixing your focus is up to you.

The philosophy of the Abbey is to help you make the most of all your God-given beauty, with a minimal commitment of time, finances, fussing, and pain so that you can go out and make the most of each day. Avoid comparing yourself to Hollywood ideals that only exist with soft lenses, computer adjusted photos, and permanent accounts at local surgical clinics. (Watch this.) We believe in helping you do the best you can with what you have and want you to be happy with yourself, where you are, at whatever stage. The Abbey's finest moments are when someone tells us that she has never felt happier or more confident. That's a good day.

Aging is neither optional nor selective. How you approach the process is up to you. Just remember, you are not alone.

FOUNTAIN of YOUTH QUICK TIP: Lip Lines

lipsLIP LINES

Smoking, puckering, straw sucking, drink slurping, kissing, whistling --- all facial actions that, along with skin changes associated with sun exposure and age, cause the formation of small lines perpendicular to the lips. These lines should be given special attention as they can be stubborn, but they can be immediately minimized and eliminated with consistent care.

Intense Line Relief Serum is the answer. It has been reformulated to include liposomal delivery of ingredients, including plant sourced squalane (No shark or whale killing on our consciences!) to smooth lines wherever they appear. Massage the serum into the lip area both morning and night with skin smoothing motions, moving outward and around the mouth. Be especially generous at night as you have eight hours for the actives to absorb into the skin. For extra effectiveness (See "Why Emu Oil? at right.) apply emu oil as a last step.

SKIN CARE COSMETICS: How to Avoid Traveling Lip Color

Less is Younger ~~ Keep it Natural
Skin that is losing firmness needs less makeup, not more. Makeup tends to slide into and accentuate even tiny facial furrows. Mineral powders applied with a light hand reflect light and minimize wrinkles and sagging.

AVOID TRAVELING LIP COLOR

Speaking of lip lines, it is frustrating when lip color travels along the tiny vertical lines that form around the mouth. Some quick tips:

  1. Avoid extremely creamy lipsticks. These have a greater tendency to melt into any adjacent furrows.
  2. Apply a layer of mineral foundation powder to your lips. Lip color glides smoothly over this matte base and will remain in place.
  3. Use a brush to apply lip color as it decreases the tendency to push the color into skin furrows.
  4. Choose soft colors. Any color that does travel will be less noticeable.

WELLNESS: Helping You to Help Yourself

Many Americans look for a quick fix pill to cure what ails them rather than swallowing the more bitter pill of developing a pro-active healthy lifestyle that concentrates on preventive medicine. The point of this area of the newsletter is to provide information that will help you form healthy habits that are easy to incorporate into your daily life. You not only will feel better, you will look better. Your skin will be clearer and brighter, you will move with more grace, and your attitude will be more positive. Your well-being will be evident in your face. A few reminders:

  1. Eat more whole grains. When surveyed, three fourths of all Americans are indeed doing this, though only seven percent get enough each day. The number of whole grain products has doubled in the last two years, brown rice is becoming more popular at restaurants, and people are paying more attention to bakery items and snacks. Whole grains are a source of nutrients and fiber that help ward off constipation, diverticulosis, high cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and possibly even certain cancers.
  2. Eat less and move more. Obesity is rampant and the health problems associated with it are numerous. If you have ever watched the series, The Biggest Loser, you know that they use no pills, tricks, or gadgets beyond exercise machines. They simply watch what they eat and move more. A lot more.
  3. Wear a pedometer. Fifty percent of American men and forty-seven percent of American women engage in regular exercise, defined as moderate activity (including walking) for thirty minutes, five or more times per week. This is as simple as walking briskly as you go about your day. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that simply clipping on a pedometer motivated people to walk a mile more per day, decreasing weight and blood pressure. The authors of the study wrote that if just 10% of all American adults began a regular walking program, nearly $6 billion in costs related to treating heart disease could be saved. And while the studies involved adults, overweight children would certainly benefit. In fact, they would be even more likely to view it as a game, making it very painless. It could be a family event, with charts and tables, and rewards.
  4. Add more turmeric to your diet. An increasing number of studies document the benefits of curcumin, the active agent in turmeric. If curry is not in your diet, an easy way to obtain a daily dose of this anti-inflammatory antioxidant is to add it to your morning coffee. Add directly to brewed coffee whether in the pot or in the cup, or mix a small jar of turmeric spice into a sixteen ounce jar of instant coffee. You will obtain turmeric along with the coffee crystals and will barely notice the taste. Turmeric is an important skin care active in several of the Abbey's skin creams. It contributes to the yellow color of The Yellow Creme.
  5. Drink plenty of fluids. Fluids are necessary for cellular metabolism and the flushing away of unwanted toxins. Drinking eight glasses of water a day has been the accepted standard, but that is misleading. You get plenty of fluids from other sources, including fruits, so use common sense and don't get distracted by the eight glass mantra. Just stay hydrated.
  6. Take a deep breath and relax. Eastern spiritualists emphasize breathing techniques because they believe the mind and the breath are as one. Calm the breathing and you will calm the mind.
